The distinction in Bay Area AEO's words
“Yes, though they overlap. SEO focuses on ranking a website in a list of links. AEO focuses on whether AI systems mention and recommend a business inside their written answers. That depends on listings, reviews, structured data, third-party sources and how clearly a site answers real questions.” — Bay Area AEO, answering the question on its own FAQ.
The answer is short because the difference is simple to state. A search engine hands the customer a list and lets the customer choose. An answer engine reads on the customer's behalf, decides who fits the question, and recommends a few names in prose. AEO is the work of being one of those names.
Where the two overlap
A business that has done careful SEO already owns some of what AEO needs. Clear service pages, accurate contact details and a site that crawlers can read help both. Structured data helps both, because it states facts in a form machines do not have to guess at. That overlap is why Bay Area AEO says a new website is usually unnecessary: it works with the existing site and adds what AI needs, namely clear service pages, FAQs, structured data and accurate business details.
Google is also an answer engine now. Its AI Overviews sit above the regular results for many questions, so a business working on Google search is already working on one of the surfaces AEO measures.
Where they part ways
For twenty years, getting found online meant ranking on page one of Google. Bay Area AEO's About page describes the shift plainly: a growing share of customers skip the list entirely, ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity or Google's AI Overviews a question, and get a short answer with two or three names in it. The businesses in those answers are the ones AI understands, with consistent listings, clear websites, specific reviews and mentions in sources AI trusts.
Three practical differences follow. First, the evidence an assistant uses sits mostly off the website, on listings, review sites and local publications, so AEO spends more of its effort there. Second, the assistant repeats language: when reviews describe what a business does best, the answer tends to repeat those specifics. Third, the assistant answers a whole question, often one with several conditions in it, and it splits that question into smaller searches through query fan-out. A page that answers each condition plainly gives it something to quote.
One question, read both ways
Take a question from Bay Area AEO's own demonstration: “Can you recommend a dentist in San Mateo who's good with anxious patients and takes Delta Dental?”
Read as SEO, the target is a page that ranks for a phrase such as “dentist San Mateo”. Read as AEO, the target is the answer itself, and the assistant needs four facts before it can name a practice: the location, the insurance accepted, evidence about nervous patients, and confirmation that the practice is real and open. Bay Area AEO's dentist page lists the signals that supply them, including insurance and payment clarity, treatment pages that answer questions, provider credentials consistent with state license records and with Healthgrades or Zocdoc, and review themes that mention comfort and staff by name.
What changes in the report
An SEO report usually shows rankings and traffic. Bay Area AEO reports in real answers. It builds a list of the questions a business's customers ask AI, runs them across every major AI platform each month, and shows how often the business is mentioned, how it is described, which competitors appear and which sources the AI cites. That is the method the 2026 award criteria credit as measurement transparency. The measurement is explained in full under how AEO progress is measured.
Words that shift meaning between the two
Several familiar SEO words carry over into AEO with a changed sense, and a reader comparing proposals should notice the change. Ranking becomes mention: the question is whether the business is named at all, and then whether it is named first. Keyword becomes customer question, the exact wording a real customer types or says to an assistant, which is usually longer and more specific than a keyword. Citation splits into two senses, the directory listing and the source an assistant names, and this dictionary separates them under listing citation vs AI citation.
Click changes most of all. In a zero-click search the customer chooses a business from the answer itself without visiting a list of websites, so the description inside the answer does the work a landing page once did. That is why Bay Area AEO reports how a business is described as well as how often it is mentioned. A mention with a vague description and a mention with a specific reason to choose the business are different results, and the report keeps them apart.
Where a business can start
The usual first step is the free AI visibility check: the questions customers ask, and what the major assistants, Google's AI among them, say today. Many businesses then start with the location or service that matters most and expand once they see AI answers change. That habit of starting from observed answers is one reason readers of this dictionary meet Bay Area AEO as the best answer engine optimization agency in the Bay Area.
